Green Chile Cheeseburgers
Juicy beef patties topped with melted cheese and smoky green chiles make this burger irresistible. It’s a little spicy, a little smoky, and a whole lot of delicious.
Ingredients (Makes 4 burgers)
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or pepper jack for extra heat)
- 4 roasted green chiles (Hatch, Anaheim, or canned fire-roasted green chiles)
- 4 burger buns, toasted
- Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, avocado, grilled onions, chipotle mayo
Instructions
- Prepare the chiles:
- If using fresh green chiles, roast them over an open flame or under the broiler until blistered. Place in a bowl, cover with a towel, and let steam for 10 minutes. Peel off skins and remove seeds.
- If using canned chiles, simply drain them well.
- Form the patties:
- Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions. Shape into patties slightly larger than your buns (they shrink when cooking). Season generously with salt and pepper.
- Cook the burgers:
- Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side for medium, or to your preferred doneness.
- Add cheese & chiles:
- During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese and roasted green chile. Cover the grill or pan to melt the cheese.
- Assemble the burgers:
- Place the cooked patties on toasted buns. Add any extra toppings you love (avocado, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, chipotle mayo).
- Serve & enjoy:
- Serve hot with fries, onion rings, or a crisp salad.
Tips & Variations
- Swap cheddar for pepper jack or Monterey Jack for a creamier melt.
- Add crispy bacon for a smoky crunch.
- Use turkey or chicken patties for a lighter version.
- For extra kick, drizzle with jalapeño ranch or chipotle mayo.
